Can a policy centered around creating an upper limit to sea level rise help create new hope for a safe climate?
Current temperatures have ALREADY breached 1.5 C post industrial warming, endangering lives
and ecosystems around the planet. This is also elevating sea levels which is especially dangerous for Florida, small island states and coastal regions around the globe.
How can we find real hope for a safe climate in spite of current projections which are overshooting global targets? We will speak with
several climate experts in complementary fields as we strategize new global policies and targets that can help save lives and lower global temperatures.
Rafe Pomerance, Arctic Fellow at the Woodwell
Climate Research Center will tell us about his work with Rethink Energy Florida to create an upper limit to
sea level rise. Herb Simmens, author of Climate Vocabulary for the Future and a co-founder of the Healthy
Planet Action Coalition will explain how the climate triad may be able to help reduce sea level rise. Laurence
Kalkstein (IPCC Working Group 2) and President of Applied Climatologists will share some life saving
strategies and technologies he has been implementing to help save energy and cool cities around the world. Aria McKenna of Global Cooling Productions will host.

Hi Tom,
I will try to join the Climate Week event at 2 pm EDT, today [1] when Aria is chairing a discussion including Rafe and Herb.
People from Florida, pay attention! Dangerous sea level for them is inevitable without drastic cooling intervention! Even so, setting a limit would draw attention to this predicament. Trump Towers are at stake, along with trillions in real estate. John Englander has drawn attention to this in his book "High tide on main street" but few seem to be listening.
Commenting on a report on the effect of sea level rise (SLR) on megacities, Sir David King said that .0.3 to 0.4 metres would be catastrophic.
Look at the facts [2]. Sea level rise (SLR) was 15 cms in the 100 years of the last century, for an average rise in sea surface temperature (SST) of about 0.2C above the 1900 baseline. Then it rose 7.5 cms in 20 years from 2000 to 2020, with a SST of about 0.8C above the 1900 baseline. With SST four times as high, the expansion of the ocean in 20 years has caused perhaps 6 cms of the SLR with the remaining 1.5 cms from glacier mass loss. The contribution of glaciers to SLR is now overtaking the steric SLR from ocean expansion. With SST likely to average over 2C between 2020 and 2100, we could expect 120 cms from steric SLR alone. That is 3 to 4 times what Sir David would consider catastrophic. But the contribution from glaciers is even more dangerous.
The accelerating ice mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) is particularly worrying. The acceleration shows marked positive feedback. The GIS is thus a tipping element already activated. In order to halt and reverse this trend, it is vital to start lowering the Arctic temperature. This will require 0.5 to 1.0 petawatts of cooling power, which can only be obtained by Stratospheric Aerosol Injection SAI) . If this intervention is not applied promptly, we are liable to commit future generations to complete meltdown of the GIS, leading to around 7 metres of SLR. This will trigger several times as much SLR from Antarctic glaciers, which are already showing tipping behaviour.
So deployment of SAI could not be more urgent for refreezing the Arctic. And it will also be necessary for lowering global SST below the average of 0.2C during the last century, otherwise steric SLR alone would be catastrophic.
What would be a sensible limit on SLR? I would put it at 0.25 metres above today's level because of the 0.3 being potentially catastrophic for a number of megacities.- and also for Florida as a whole, I suspect. It could only conceivably achieved with SAI at full scale within a few years.
Much has been written about the high risks from SAI. But research suggests that subpolar SAI would be quite harmless and could have the power to refreeze the Arctic. It could even be done by the US alone, though for political reasons best to involve other countries, especially to include China. Despite what Jennifer Francis said in her MEER talk yesterday, it would be quite affordable at a few tens of billions of dollars per year.

Aria did an excellent job in putting together the program and moderating the session.

There were close to 50 people in attendance the great majority of whom were folks in key positions in local government, academia and the civic sector throughout Florida.

I’d love to show them the large South Florida sea shells in my study that grew the last time temperatures were 1-2 C warmer than today, sea level was about 25 feet higher, the beach was north of Lake Okeechobee, and all South Florida was the northernmost Bahamian sandbank.
But unfortunately I’ll then be in a meeting of a New England shore town that lost their beach this year to the last hurricane, and don’t know what to do, but are being peddled some ridiculously expensive options.

The Governors of Florida, Texas, and Louisiana have all declared that climate change is a “hoax” and banned any reference to climate change, sea level rise, or global warming from all state planning and assessment documents.
Since there is no climate change, this is clearly an act of god, to whom their mass compulsory prayers should be continued until the end of the hurricane season, along with shovels to put all the sand back where god intended. Their prayers will assure they will stay there forever as long as they don’t ever interrupt them for a second, unleashing satan’s diabolical flood or matters to the same effect.

It’s fascinating and horrifying to see the reality denial community desperately conjure up alternative explanations for the intensity and frequency of these storms that don’t acknowledge the central role of climate change.
They claim it’s due to weather manipulation, they blame Democrats and the deep state, and they and Trump indicate this is all a huge plot designed to destroy Republican communities to affect next months election.
Below is a representative set of posts on Twitter that are all too common.
Those of us committed to evidence based aggressive climate action need to take into account the pervasive and ever growing role of disinformation as the latest in a series of bogus arguments designed to create enough doubt and confusion to weaken political support for effective action.
This follows the discussion last week on the right wing US states led by Tennessee that are passing laws against geoengineering outdoor experimentation based upon disinformation and fantasies about weather manipulation.

There may be no option but to face the reality that the critically thinking baby will be thrown out with the bath water as we attempt to educate and purge the rotting debris that is quashing rational thought.
