Sep 6 2024 10:18PM - Oswald Petersen Thanks Dennis. Great article. Somebody should inform Pascal Lamy that SRM it not the only alternative to ERA…
Sep 7 2024 2:17PM - Michael MacCracken Hi Dennis--Problem is he still lists supposed shortcomings that have been researched and generally dismissed, namely acid rain and ozone depletion. The termination shock issue would mainly result if emissions are not reduced while SRM is used to take temperatures down a good bit from where they are. And on changes in weather patterns, compared to what--the question is by how much or how little does the range of weather that would be induced compared to what has been experienced, much less to what we are headed for--this comparing of central values rather than the ranges of conditions is really a simplification that is likely quite misleading to real consideration of the issue.
So, the article is better, but in my view pretty far from a fully clear-eyed presentation of the issue to be considered.

In addition to the concerns you express the article essentially introduces a couple of positions and conditions that are all but Poison Pills that negate the mostly otherwise positive statements in the article.
Reflecting not surprisingly the position of the Overshoot Commission that he chairs he calls for a moratorium to be adopted by every country on large scale experimentation and deployment.
This leaves an enormous opening for anti cooling activists to lobby governments all over the world to shut down DCC experimentation.
Imagine how difficult if not impossible it would be to go back to the governments that enacted moratoria asking them to lift their moratoria at some unspecified date in the future.
This moratorium language in my judgment would absolutely kill any organized efforts to advance DCC.
Given what we know of the sharp differences of opinion amongst the Overshoot Commissioners I can only assume that the inclusion of the moratorium language was a necessary compromise to get those commission members on board who may not have even wanted to see anything positive said about DCC.
In addition by labeling it as a ‘last resort’ rather than articulating that the safest and most effective portfolio of DCC needs to be developed and deployed he reinforces the almost universal perception that the world is nowhere near the point of having to face the need to deploy DCC.
It is for these and other reasons why so many of us were so terribly disappointed by the report issued last fall by the Overshoot Commission.
